The Mrs and I had a very enjoyable meal on Saturday evening. The Mrs had an excellent bresaola and I had a dish was new on the menu smoked mackerel mousse wrapped in gravadlax with toast melba which was superb. Too few restaurants provide toast melba nowadays. We both followed that with calf's liver which was cooked excellently and not swimming in butter. With that came the Grill's trademark chips which are always good and we had a side of green beans. All of that was washed down with a good Rose. For desert the Mrs had the crumble and I, tempted by recommendation from another reviewer, had the ice cream with coffee and Bailey's (not sure that I would repeat that but it was different).
The service was very good and not over fussy. All in all a tremendous meal.

We were welcomed by Joan & Shy as if we were long lost Family. This was our second visit & thoroughly enjoyable. The service from Rick was attentive & the food delicious.
Highly recommend this small but homely eatery.
Looking forward to our next visit.

Fast becoming one of our favourite local restaurants. The fillet steak is so tender and they have an allergy menu for those with intolerances.

I have been in this restaurant twice, both time the food tasted fresh and prepared superbly! The whole staff is really polite and friendly, they really make the difference!!! So glad to see people passionate about their job...I believe that dining is about food and and atmosphere, here is a win win! Highly recommended!!!

After a lovely walk through Hampstead Heath we stopped off at The Grill for a Sunday Roast. The food was excellent and service was top notch. White linen experience but still relaxed and very family friendly.
Great selection off the menu too but if you're here on a Sunday you can't go past the roast.
Very highly recommended.

We had to get the 6.30 "slot" as the restaurant was full (Saturday). Quality of food is excellent. Portions too large for myself but my husband very happy. The first course for me was delicious and my main course of lamb's liver was the best I had had in years (but a lot), no room for a dessert for me but my husband managed as always to have another course. Our friends enjoyed the food and restaurant, so a nice evening as none of us wanted a late one.
Other diners arrived from 7.30ish so became extremely noisy. Looked like some celebration evening out for some.
We haven't been on for Sunday lunch but am told it is excellent.

My late mother used to say that she didn't like food that had been "mucked bout with." Well, that's exactly what she why she would have liked this place so much.
The owner has fine-tuned the menu to reflect the tastes of the [predominantly] more mature clientele. From the experience of my wife and I on a Sunday lunchtime, diners seemed to be relishing their roast beef meals and everybody was in 'haute voix' - what the locals are known as the "Temple Fortune Tellers" - which evidently showed that they were enjoying themselves! A concise wine-list offers 'safe' choices too.

Needed somewhere handy to our hotel and our daughter's flat on the eve of helping her to move. But didn't expect to find such a gem.
Sadly unlikely to be back as daughter is moving from NW6 to SW19. Perhaps one day?

We had another enjoyable meal at this very good local restaurant. Service was very attentive and food delicious and nicely cooke. New starter of mackerel mousse wrapped in gravadlax got the thumbs up. I especially enjoyed my veal loin.

The Grill at 424 offered more than just a great menu; from the moment we walked in the staff treated us with the utmost hospitality and kindness and consequently turned what would have been a nice birthday dinner into a great experience. The food was simply delicious: the lamb and sea bass were cooked to perfection and my gf's birthday dessert was a chocolate-lover's heaven, complemented with a candle. The ambiance was simple and welcoming and the small dining area lends itself well to an intimate atmosphere. The establishment is co-owned by two lovely people (Joan and Shy) who take great pride in running a first-class restaurant with a range of culinary offerings. They each showed an earnest interest in getting to know their customers, making sure the dining experience met expectations and offering menu recommendations based on personal preferences. Such a personal touch is seldom encountered in busy London. Ultimately, we'll be coming back for the food, the ambiance and the hospitality. Looking forward to next time...

A wonderful, small and intimate restaurant. Versatile enough for romance, business, birthdays, the lot! The staff are so welcoming and especially the current head waiter - a dream! He paid just the right amount of attention and have good recommendations of required. Love it! Will keep on dining there for years to come.

My fiancé and I are discerning foodies, and big carnivores.
We visited this local restaurant today for 'Sunday Lunch'
And rather than go for the traditional sirloin Sunday lunch, which incidentally looked great!.....We decided to go for the rib of beef for two......Well well well, it was fantastic, as good as any we have experienced in any location internationally.
Fresh cotton tablecloths, coupled with friendly, experienced staff made the experience memorable.
The Baileys affogato was to die for.....we've been home for three hours and can still 'taste' this memorable lunch.
Can't wait to return.

Saturday night and this brilliant little bistro was packed, but that didn't affect the quality of service or the meal. The proprietors were charming, the food delicious, the wines lovely and our experience could not have been happier. We fell in through the door almost by accident and were welcomed in and made to feel like they could not have been more pleased to see us. Everything was prepared with attention to detail, without being pretentious or affected. It was a completely flawless end to a lovely day

The food available here is always of a high quality due to their careful sourcing of quality ingredients. The staff & owners are always friendly & welcoming and the restaurant has a relaxing ambiance. They also go above & beyond to ensure that children are well catered for whether they be toddlers or teenagers. So nice to eat in a family run restaurant rather then these soulless chain restaurants - a more genuine atmosphere where customers are valued as people, not just as a source of profit

We visited this restaurant for Sunday lunch today. Despite my mother in law only booking for two and four turning up, we were accomodated with a table very quickly even though the restaurant was very busy.

The Grill is one of the best restaurants I have eaten in. Nice staff and atmosphere The food is excellent and the quality and quantity is correctly balanced to make you feel happy you feel so content afterwards. I go often and take friends as I know it will be appreciated and can rely on a good menu, good cook and good staff - 5 out of 5 for excellence. It is a busy small cosy restaurant - another good sign - so would advise to book.

We have been visiting The Grill since they first opened and we love the place. We have a big family and it doesn't matter if you are in your 70s or in your teens - you will find top-class food and a warm atmosphere. The staff are helpful and friendly. The owners care passionately about from where they source their food and they support the local community. We are totally spoiled, not having to get in the car to find a good meal.

My boyfriend and I stumbled upon this little place just googling around at what was nearby. The food was absolutely delicious and the service was superb. Everything you'd expect from a high quality restaurant. The area is a bit misleading as most of the restaurants nearby are little cafes and pubs so we were shocked it was as good as it was! The wine that was recommended to us was great as well, they even let me buy a bottle for half price to take home with me. I would definitely recommend it.

Found this little gem by googling to see if there were any restaurants near our hotel on a recent stay in London. The menu looked okay so booked using open table. I received a call on the day to check we were still coming. We ate early (630pm) as we had to be somewhere, and at first were the only ones in the restaurant but didn't feel awkward. The service was really friendly and good. The food was amazing!! We both had three courses which is very unlike us! When the bill came it was really reasonable also. Overall really happy we chose this restaurant!

Our 4th visit was an enjoyable evening. We live nearby and originally were eating with friends in a West End restaurant but we had to change the venue during the day. It was mother's day on Sunday and we had a very tasty meal. Some had the roast of the day which was very good. Another eat liver which was pronounced excellent. Starters and deserts were good. The service was friendly and efficient. All of us are foodies and we felt that it hit the spot. We decided that it has a good consistent standard.

thanks to a recommendation from a friend who lives locally, we visited this restaurant for Sunday lunch. It has been converted from two shop fronts in a rather downmarket part of a busy suburban main road so expectations were not very high but it proved to be a very pleasant surprise. The choice of dishes was very reasonable, the food was of good quality, well prepared and in very generous portions. Service was exceptionally friendly and obliging. Prices were quite reasonable for the quality of the offering. So if you are in the NW11 area, looking for a very good, medium priced meal and don't care about plush decor and hunting prints, this place can be hiighly recommended.

We went here last Saturday night on a colleague's recommendation. We knew it would be busy as we were unable to book a table two weeks earlier.
We were shown to a nice table at the front of the restaurant. At a first glance the menu is varied and there were several options that took my fancy for both starters and mains. The starters were great but the main courses whislt very nice and well cooked were to be honest a touch un-adventurous but then again this is called The Grill and that indeed is what it is. Nothing fancy but it works.
It was also great to see chicken kiev making a guest appearance on a menu after so many years absence.

We are lucky to have such a fine and friendly restaurant in an area where there is a shortage of interesting places to eat. The staff are unfailingly welcoming and helpful and the quality of the ingredients match the high standard of the cooking and presentation. Although this is not a low-budget restaurant, there is a good variety of dishes, including seasonal specials, to suit most pockets. Equally important (for us), the ambience is quiet and relaxing, making dinner conversation a pleasure rather than, in so many restaurants now, almost impossible.

Well, just occasionally you have to do a lunch - so my friend Nina and I found ourselves in the Child's Hill bit of Finchley Road in need of just that. And we found the the Grill at 424 in an otherwise pretty uninspiring area. We tried the lunch menu and it proved to be very good value. Nina had chilli prawns and a really well cooked "Fish of the Day", which was hake. I had the whitebait and duck confit - both cooked well. A couple of glasses of the house white and red - good value again - and attentive relaxed service meant we had a really good time. We'll be back!

We took my parents to this restaurant and were in no way disappointed. The food was freshly cooked and very well prepared. I had roast chicken with the trimmings which was a very good sized portion and tasty. The tables are well spread out and the ambience is good. My father has difficulty in walking and so the fact that there are no parking restrictions over the weekend outside is a boon for anyone who needs to park in close proximity to the restaurant.

We went to this restaurant as a group of 8 on a Saturday night and it was a huge success. Firstly, we were sat at a lovely round table which I always think work best when in a big group. Then the menu choice was fantastic, I love going to a restaurants where you're spoilt for options rather than struggling to make a choice because of the strange concoctions on offer. Here there were options to suit all fish/meat and veggie. All 8 of us had a delicious meal and also had some fantastic bottles of wine.
I.ve no hesitation recommending this place to others.

One of the delights of London is the unheralded gems you can stumble upon, sometimes only a few steps away from your own home. That’s what happened to us when we hit upon The Grill at 424. I knew we were in the right kind of place when the waiter, seeing the three of us struggling over the choice of wine, offered us a taste of our two prospects. The house wine was better than our other choice, and cheaper. The menu was not extensive but far from standard, showing a bit of flair and creativity. Service was friendly and prices reasonable (£35 with wine split 3 ways). I had a few quibbles – bread cost extra and my excellent medallions of veal could have used some greenery on the plate. But these do not detract from a top rating. There may be much better restaurants in London, but not in this culinary deprived neighborhood.

I had a group dinner at the Grill 424 for a friends birthday in Feb 2013 and felt like I'd walked into a privately booked out restaurant, thanks to the care and attention of the staff. The atmosphere was very relaxed and inviting. Staff took time and genuine interest in your requests, even to the point of talking you through dishes as you battle to decide (as an indecisive eater) what you want! Food came to the table well presented, freshly prepared and perfectly cooked and wine choices were well considered. Prices were really reasonable too. I'd like a Grill 424 to open up nearer to me in south london, is probably my only complaint!

This restaurant has risen from the ashes of the old Mezzaluna, where we dined years ago and hated it. It was noisy and the food barely average. Now the The Grill has emerged and it's good, very good. High quality local, although its geographical situation should have no bearing on its fare. There were four of us and I cannot fault any of the food. Well executed and nicely presented. Don't think that because it's local it's cheap. You certainly get what you pay for here. Comfortable and acceptable sound level.

Simple regional dishes many French, ranging from excellent confit de canard, liver pate served in individual cruts, great whitebait, lamb shank, tuna and cod - with a light touch. Great Fresh desserts. So different from the microwaved sauce-smothered dishes prepared by so many local 'restaurants' - their chef is good. Go, and enjoy! ps.their Australian Pinot Noir is brilliant.

Knowing this local restaurant had changed hands, four of us decided to try this new reincarnation on Saturday night for dinner. Simple modern decor and a lovely table by the window greeted followed by quck and polite service. We each had different main courses and were all absolutely delighted by our choices. My husband raved about his chicken liver starter and main mushroom pasta and I had a main of perfect pink liver and sweet onion. Our friends ordered the ice cream and I was treated to a taste of the most amazing honeycomb ice cream! The bill was very reasonably priced and it will certainly become a favourite in the future. They also have a very well priced lunch menu which we look forward to trying sometime soon.

I've been to The Grill at 424 two times and I'm eagerly anticipating my next visit! On my first visit, I had the scallops to start, followed by steak and then the rice pudding brulee to put a cherry on top of the wonderful evening we had. The second time I had the calf's liver, which was divine. The food's quality definitely speaks for itself, and this must be why the owners have the confidence to serve it fairly plain. I think a lot of restaurants try to do something completely different to other restaurants and end up over-complicating their food. The Grill at 424 has brought it back to basics, and their wine list, although not mind-blowingly long (thank God), is made up of the perfect tipple to complement the dishes. You can tell thought has been put even the smallest things, the art on the walls, the bowls the chips are put in - all of this contributes to the enjoyment of the experience. The owners are so friendly, and take the utmost care in making sure everyone enjoys their evening. On top of this, it's an evening that doesn't break the bank. I would recommend this place to anyone.

“Super menu - fantastic service”
My father, brother and I visited the restaurant for dinner twice last week. We were totally blown away by the experience.
The restaurant is comfortable and cosy, without being crowded. It was almost full on both evenings but this did not interfere with our enjoyment in any way.
The menu is varied and interesting. My personal choices were the herrings in meal with gooseberry compote and the grilled pork liver. My companions enjoyed sirloin steaks (which really were cooked to order) and a variety of other grilled meats. Dessert highlights included the tiramisu and baked lemon cheesecake.
The restaurant staff were most helpful. I would like to mention Greg in particular, who was totally professional but also happy to chat with us. Coming from Northern Ireland, I was delighted to hear about the success of his band, Joyland (check out the videos reviews for yourselves!)
All in all, our visits were most enjoyable and certainly the highlight of our visit to London.

We are constantly looking for new restaurants in West Hampstead/Child's Hill as the current options have got somewhat jaded over the years. For those that remember it, this is on the old Mezzaluna site. We went on a Tuesday night and so the restaurant was very quiet which dampened the atmostphere down, but I imagine it will be busy on a Friday or Saturday night. The menu has some really interesting choices - we had a variety from the menu, steak, fish, risotto and all was well cooked and delicious. The staff are very attentive (though it was quiet). We will definitely go back and would recommend it to others.

“A MUST VISIT !!”

The Grill at 424 is fantastic.
I have eaten here about 6 times and I have never been let down. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable but most of all the FOOD is excellent - as good as any top West End brasserie and much better value for money !!!
My next goal is to have Sunday lunch which I am really looking forward to.
Do try it, you will not be disappointed, I promise.

“A great dining treat with fresh food, superb affordable wine list and lovely owners!”

This restaurant has now become a regular venue for all the family. The food is excellent, a well devised menu using the freshest ingerdients possible - from starters, mains and deserts.
The veal chop is out of this world and as is with all the food here.. always cooked to perfection.
The wine list surpases most restaurants I frequent, different, challenging and very affordable. Great selection on sweet wine and digestives as well.
This is gem of a place and the owners are oustanding hosts and the dining experiance is clearly illustated as a result.
If only all restaurants adopted the same pragmatic approach to cooking, service and hospitality!
A superb restaurant that deseves its success - well done!

“Look no Further for a great restaurant”
Reviewed 18 July 2012
I have now eaten in this place at least 8 times. I eat out at least 4 times a week and consider myself a serious 'foodie'. I absolutely love this little restaurant - it is both consistant and brilliant value for the quality of food. Try the deep fried white bait starter, the steak and string fries, the portobello mushroom, the tiramisu..... all seriously good. Wine List is short but some great wines - and very reasonably priced. The place is spotless with lovely white linen cloth tables, some great staff - (Waitress called Ruth (I think) and another great Chap (Irish lilt in his accent) - really nice people.
This place deserves to be successful - take my word for it - I have eaten in so many joints accross London - particularily NW London - and I think this place is about as good a suburban restuarant as you'll find.
